Poland now has one of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe. But it wasn't always so: in 1956, the Polish People's Republic legalized abortion. And this right to abortion was subsequently restricted - paradoxically due to the rise of the Solidarnosc movement and the influence of Pope John Paul II.
